Tech startup Genies employs chatbots for the employee onboarding process

The influence of AI on HR, particularly in the realm of onboarding, is increasingly apparent. A survey conducted by talent acquisition platform Eightfold AI revealed that 69% of HR professionals incorporated AI into their onboarding processes in 2022. Similarly, a report from research firm Gartner found that 81% of HR professionals have explored or implemented AI solutions to enhance process efficiency within their organizations.

Genies, a tech startup specializing in digital avatars, aligns with these trends in its HR department. Since 2022, the company has employed two chatbots based on OpenAI’s GBT-4 technology to educate employees about its predominantly Gen Z user base and direct them to HR resources.

The introduction of these chatbots has streamlined the onboarding process at Genies. Employees can engage with the chatbots to gain insights into Gen Z culture and receive relevant news updates tailored to the target audience. According to CEO Akash Nigam, the chatbots are designed to communicate in a manner reflective of Gen Z language and preferences, fostering increased familiarity among new hires with Genies’ target demographic.

Jordison emphasized that while the Gen Z chatbot enhances onboarding, it does not replace all aspects of the educational experience. However, it eliminates the need for repetitive meetings during the initial weeks of employment, allowing employees to obtain relevant information efficiently. For instance, instead of attending meetings with the marketing team to understand Gen Z preferences, employees can interact with the chatbot for immediate insights.

Following the success of the Gen Z chatbot, Genies introduced a second chatbot powered by GPT-4 technology to streamline the sharing of company information. This chatbot serves as a repository for company documents, policies, and holiday schedules, offering employees quick access to essential information.

Despite the integration of AI chatbots into the onboarding process, the HR team at Genies collaborates with AI experts across the organization to optimize the chatbots’ utility for employees. Jordison emphasized the importance of discerning where AI can assist and where it falls short, highlighting the iterative nature of AI integration in enhancing employee experiences.
