Zoom, the video communications platform, recently announced job cuts alongside a strategic shift in its approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), according to an internal document obtained by HR Dive. Chief Operating Officer Aparna Bawa informed staff of these changes in a memo dated January 29, highlighting the company’s recognition of the need to revamp its DEI and learning and development strategies. Bawa indicated that Zoom would collaborate with established DEI firms specializing in tech companies to drive these changes.
The restructuring included the disbandment of an internal team dedicated to DEI, as reported by Bloomberg. This development coincides with similar shifts in DEI programs observed in other technology giants like Google and Meta, as reported by CNBC in December. Heightened concerns regarding potential legal challenges to DEI commitments emerged following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling on university admission programs.
Zoom, however, affirmed its ongoing commitment to DEI principles, asserting that they remain integral to the company’s culture and operations. Bawa outlined plans to introduce new programming aimed at engaging employees and supporting employee resource groups while adapting approaches to personal and team development topics like DEI to better address the needs of leaders and teams.
The broader trend of corporate reevaluation of DEI initiatives has been noticeable since 2022, driven partly by concerns over potential economic downturns. Reports, such as one by Monster in early 2023, highlighted DEI initiatives as among the first to be cut during recessions, underscoring the need for HR leaders to maintain alignment between DEI efforts and business objectives.
Experts advise HR teams to prioritize building trust with employees and leveraging data analysis to better understand workforce demographics and the impact of DEI initiatives. This strategic approach emphasized at events like the Society for Human Resource Management’s 2023 Inclusion event, seeks to address opposition to DEI efforts while ensuring their alignment with organizational goals.
As Zoom navigates its DEI transformation, the company underscores its commitment to embedding DEI values into its organizational DNA, signalling a proactive approach to fostering a culture of inclusion and belonging within the company.
